Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

David is very current with what's trendy and is familiar with different types of design styles. Though the style we want is not what he personally like, he is professionally experienced enough to offer the right ideas and suggestions. Whatever he wasn't familiar with, he was willing to try or spend time with us to go through choices. Generally his workers are quite good though there were some mistakes along the way due to miscommunication which David tried to work it out with us. At the end of the project, we were very happy with how the house looked. With his input, we were able too to embrace new ideas to further enhance what we were used to and try new styles. Everyone who came is very taken with how bright and spacious our house is, and how we managed to reconfigure the whole place to suit our needs.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

We would suggest that potential homeowners give themselves enough time to plan and renovate. It's also best to avoid year end as contractors receive a lot of projects to rush for new year, and the workers are very rushed and stretched. If caught in such situation, it's best to make sure every detail is spelt out clearly without presuming that the contractor or his workers share the same standard. Even names of materials or styles can be interpreted differently. This would help avoid future dispute or unnecessary rectification works which would add a lot of unnecessary stress and dollars wasted. Ideally 95 percent of the renovation can be quoted and stuck to before project begins and additional changes added subsequently can cost more than you expected. And in such situations you have little options to bargain as the project is already underway.

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $20k - $30k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

David is very patient and he listens to our needs to come up with the design and layout for us. Very pleased with my walk in wardrobe. Strongly encourage him to anyone who is looking for a ID.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

It might be a good idea to look around at renovation magazines, speak to friends and gather your ideas. You may also consider approaching afew different ID companies to source for more ideas how to renovate your home. Once all ideas are consolidated, talk to your ID in great lengths to tell him your preferred ideas and concerns. Communication is key. Allocate enough time for renovation so as to allow good workmanship and avoid rush job.

House Type: HDB 4-Room

ID Firm: Imposed Design

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $50k - $60k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

The ID is very experienced , has many ways of explaining details to us. He is also very responsive to phone calls and whatsapp, does not cut corner in providing quality for the value of the money we paid. He understands our budget and would advise on the most cost effective options and provided us with a lot of free upgrades and even accompany us to pick some fittings. Does not fret and give attitude if we decide to change things that are already done. Have recommended more friends to him.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Get a ID who knows how to draw free hand , it would be very useful when you are working on site. GO for an ID who answers your call for even the silliest question. Get an ID who can match the prices yet give you the freedom to upgrade and design your dream home with you.

House Type: Condominium

ID Firm: Imposed Design

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $30k - $40k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend Imposed Design to friends and relatives. In fact I have already been sharing his works on my social media accounts and with my new neighbors. David and his team are very dedicated and professional in their service rendered. He is always very prompt in his responses whenever we raised a concern or query with regards to the design or renovation works of our new place. He listens to us and will provide advice that are professional and practical, and he always ensures that our interests (and pockets) are protected. His fees are also reasonable given the high quality of workmanship that David and his team deliver.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Do your due diligence in research as early as you can and engage a truly professional Interior Designer (ID). The ideal will be to engage an ID who has completed works for friends/relatives and given good feedback from them. Another option may be to visit forums on renovation and interior designers. Watch out for many IDs in the market who claimed to be designers but are nothing more than sales persons. Where possible, engage yourself with the director or owner of the ID firm to better assess the capability of the firm. The turnaround for any changes in the drawings should only be within 24 – 48 hours if the ID who is handling your project is an experienced and professional one, who can easily understand your requirements and update the drawings. I would highly recommend that the homeowner have an idea of the concept he/she wants for his/her home when meeting the ID. Additionally, if he/she has any special requirements such as maximize storage, etc, let the ID know at the onset of the discussions. This way it will make it easier to get the drawings completed to the satisfaction of the homeowners quicker. Allow yourself 2-4 weeks to finalise the designs and 4-6 weeks to complete the renovation. During the renovation period, homeowners should also make frequent visits to review progress, ensure the accuracy and assess the quality of the works.

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes, my ID is very professional, creative and responsive. He has offered good ideas and aftersales services. I like the concept design and the materials he recommended. My friends who have visited my place were very impressed, particurly with the good workmanship.

Although two years had passed, it is still like a new house to me.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

While your ID can offer you the design that best suits your needs, good workmanship is equally important. You may want to pay a site visit to your ID on-going projects to see if you are happy with the quality of work.

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $60k - $70k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

We have worked with David when we renovated both our first and current homes. He is one of the rare breeds of designers who would sit and spend hours listening and discussing concepts and make practical changes to plans at every point. He is able to adapt and respect time and budget constraints, there are no unexpected costs. all very honest and upfront. We have discussed kitchen islands, bathtubs in tiny bathrooms, knocking walls, glass bathrooms and fixing big heavy wooden doors. David works with all sorts of ideas, very patiently with us. 6 yrs ago, and 6 years later. He maintains the same work values. The rare thing that David does, is his commitment and pride in his work, and the after service. Our current flat is very old, and had to be extensively renovated due to old pipes and electricals. David would supervise the renovations, and when we raised issues, or differences/ changes to plan, he would be there personally. that reassured us greatly. and things got done. In this time and age, he would send plumbers/ workmen to fix cupboards/ doors/ minor flaws even up to 1 or 2 years after the renovation, for free. He is just a very reliable person to go to. His recommendations are spot on, and we have had 5 friends going to him for the same reason. Word of mouth.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Going around to different designers and find a reliable person you can work with. Someone who values what you want for your home, not just current trends, working out exact budget (or close to). Anything is possible with more money, but having a contractor/ designer you can rely on and trust, makes or breaks the process. The clearer expectations and plans, the easier it is to work through the renovation and plan the budget. e.g. no of powerpoints, lighting points, airconditioning units, flooring types for different areas. We had plumbers and electricians, airconditioning installer all recommended by our designer. He advised us to have a look around and we were reassured that using the same team was much cheaper than outsourcing our own contacts. There was also better accountability as they already had good working relationship with David.

House Type: Condominium

ID Firm: Imposed Design

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $50k - $60k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes. Personable, Listened intently to our needs and wants and provided alternatives. Patient. Designs provided and actual work were same. Very good after-service. Would come even after renovation was completed. As ours was an old condo unit, there would be other issues we had to deal with, they would send the relevant experts over to help us solve our issues. Thus after 3 years, we are still in contact. I had also recommended them to several of my friends who were happy customers.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Choose someone who is able to promise on after-sale service. While workmanship is important, it is more realistic to go for someone mid-range and has a proven track record who delivered what was in the design. Ask for past projects to see the quality.

ID Firm: Imposed Design

Designer(s): David Kek

Budget: $40k - $50k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

YEs, definitely I will. In fact, this is the 2nd project with David. The first was my mother's place which is 8 years ago. I would say the workmanship and quality he used was impressive because they are still in very good condition.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Knowing of what design you want is important. Communication with your ID and trust In their work. Don't chose an ID if you want to doubt in his work. Also don't trust 100% in the 3D drawing. It may not turn out to be what you expect.

There are lots and lots of talented designers out there in the industry. It isn’t hard to pick one. However, there are 2 important qualities which I valued with contractor which I learnt from dealing with David. The 2 qualities which will give you a peace of mind - The professionalism and how trustworthy of a person. Why? because once the job is done, it is hard and expensive to undo. Of course, after many heartaches and headaches.
