23 Jul 2018

Tips & Advice

Simply useless or actually useful? You can turn the tables around with structural fixtures like low-lying beams, in-your-face pillars or even awkward room corners with a fresh design perspective. These designers have certainly seized the upper hand with their ingenuity in creating function and fine forms out of these previously unsightly features.

#1 Find a Focal Point

Condominium by Rezt & Relax

Even with the sharp and awkward corners bordering this living space, the designers saw opportunity in its irregular floor plan. By installing carpentry works and a raised platform, they created a stunning study which takes centrestage amidst the communal space.

#2 Embrace the Irregularities

An irregular floor plate is not always the easiest to design for but instead of masking it, why not highlight it? This condominium’s asymmetrical walls are emphasised by the false ceiling feature which draws out a cool, organic flow.

#3 Design in Disguise

Upping the game is this TV feature wall which not only incorporates pop-up design panels, but also hides the wiring and irregularity of the wall. It’s truly the best of both worlds. In terms of aesthetics, this three-dimensional feature carries a sleek look that adds impact to the space.

#4 New Configurations

Low beams are not always the most attractive but it can be enhanced with a brand new room configuration; if the floor plan allows. This beam right outside the kitchen allows the demarcation of the dining and kitchen with the introduction of a false wall that aligns everything.

Structural pillars may get in the way of things but some wall space is always good to work in vertical storage. For this open-concept space, extending the pillar is a great solution as it serves as a privacy divider and creates shelving too.
