The house of Sakthi and Sasikala is at once elegant and daring, thanks to the chameleon-like colour-changing LED lights that have been installed throughout the living area and bedrooms. The bold move was at the suggestion of their designer, Johnner Tan of EightySeven Studio. Hear the story of their renovation.

HomeRenoGuru: How did you come to engage EightySeven Studio to renovate your home?
Sakthi: I had shortlisted EightySeven Studio, mainly because I was impressed with Johnner Tan’s quick turnaround. Whenever I asked for some design changes, he was able to produce the changes almost within the same day or the next day.

HomeRenoGuru: What were some crucial inputs from your designer?
Sakthi: In the living room, we have the feature wall behind the TV. Johnner Tan suggested don’t go with a smaller design because your TV is really big. So if the TV is really big, then you’ll have to have a design that is really big also. So he suggested to have a criss-cross design, which I really liked. It matches the mirror also, so we really liked it.
HomeRenoGuru: What would you say are the highlights of your renovation?
Sakthi: When you look at the master bedroom, we chose a king size bed and we also chose the false ceiling. The false ceiling also matches the bedframe.
Another part to highlight is in my second son’s bedroom, which is very complicated because we have the storage area. We wanted to cover the storage area, but some of the designers told us we had to hack it, like (what they say) they want to dismantle it. But we don’t like that idea. We had another idea that no other designers were willing to do, but EightySeven Studio was. My first son’s room we also like. The lamination colours match with the painting as well as the bed frames, and even their study table.
Stunning lighting effects in the master bedroom pair downlights with colour-changing LED cove lights
I especially like the way Johnner Tan put the down-lights as well as the cove lights for each and every room. If you look at the rooms right, every room has cove lights and colourful LED lights. I can change the colour any time, I have the remote to change the colours. And then all the down lights with the remote, I can dim it, I can change the colour tone, I can reduce the lighting.

Sakthi: I will definitely recommend EightySeven Studio to my friends. The reason being, they are willing to help even after we move in.
