House Type: HDB 5-Room/Exec/Mansionette

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Andy Quek

Budget: $50k - $60k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes. Andy is very responsible and experienced in terms of practicality of design. He is also helpful and always contactable whenever we need help even after the renovation has been handed over. We chose him over other designers because we could feel the sincerity and passion in his work.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Choosing the right ID is very important. If you get the slightest hunch that he is compromised in terms of punctuality, cash flow or capabilities, do not hesitate to make a change.

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

I had expected renovation to be a very gruelling task, but it turned out to be rather relaxed - thanks to Jeremy and his team of very capable people. They’ve proven themselves to be not just good at design, but they take every detail into consideration. They have a careful thought-through process behind each layout and furniture they design, what’s the best material and color scheme to use, usability and the day-to-day feel of the house long after the renovation is done. Personally, it was just amazing looking at how Jeremy planned the wiring and piping for air-conditioner. I mean, we may think that this is not a difficult task, but he took the effort to make things look clean while remaining practical. And renovation is not just about the design. One must be able to build what one designs. Jeremy’s team handled this very well. I admired their ability to translate 3D design into actual work, and their work coordination is like a pipelining process - which contractor would start first, for how long, and which contractor would follow after that - very efficient. They are very hands-on people and I’ve seen how they give very detailed instructions to the builders and contractors to ensure things are built according to design and quality. Thank you Jeremy, Philip, Daphne and the rest of your team who had worked tirelessly for our project. We love our new home, the feeling of living in it, the usability and quality of the renovation you’ve built for us… your passion that combines design and practicality, your eye for details and your minds that constantly look out for us... we are grateful that we were in very good hands. We like what you always say “work on this house as if it were our own house.”

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

It took us only 6+ weeks to complete this renovation (hacking, laying new tiles, wiring, piping, air-cond installation, painting, woodwork). A large part of this speedy work is all thanks to Jeremy's team who did all the planning and heavy-lifting for us. Most people would say that we need to "press" our designer and contractors so that they won't neglect quality and deliver as promised. We now see things otherwise. When we understand how they think, how they work, how they want to do well in this detailed renovation work—giving them trust would give both parties less stress and more synergy. Eg. The week of plastering, I was wondering why there was no work done that week. I later learned that we needed to give time for the plaster to dry up, so we won't get cracked walls due to painting over wet plaster. I highly recommend Jeremy and Designscale as a reliable interior designer and renovator. Speak with Jeremy and you'll understand how he creates his design. He really does the heavy lifting to make things practical yet look good (long after the renovation is done). I'm still enjoying the looks of my house and it's 2 years after renovation now.

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Andy was excellent and professional in originating design ideas to design conceptualization, and project management. He is practical in his design themes and is careful not to over-propose design ideas. Project was completed within schedule and was carefully managed by Andy over 5 weeks. Workmanship is excellent with practically nothing much to touch up post handover. Will definitely recommend Andy and the Designscale team as your trusted ID.

Timeline was well managed within schedule as promised. Designscale's experience in interior design is evident from the seamless execution and sound advice with regards to lighting and electrical works.

House Type: HDB 4-Room

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Jeremy Ong

Budget: $30k - $40k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes. Jeremy would offer practical suggestions and furnishing ideas when we are clueless. He would try to help us save cost by eliminating unnecessary expenditures. For eg, we were thinking of totally replacing our windows and grills. He felt that the condition of the windows were still new and advise us not to buy new windows, and only replace the grills. It was a good decision.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

It's common that there will be minor defects even after the renovation is deemed completed. It's important that the ID is responsible and will help you correct the defects and touch-up for you after handing over the unit to you.

House Type: HDB 5-Room/Exec/Mansionette

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Jeremy

Budget: $30k - $40k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Jeremy was patient and gave many useful ideas on managing our limited space and keeping our design as simple but elegant as possible. This was our first time renovating and he understood how to guide us thru the whole process that could have otherwise been quite stressful. In fact we entrusted most of the decisions to his judgement and even went on a vacation during our renovation period. Jeremy also gave us tips on our choice of furniture and fittings to blend into our overall theme and that was definitely a value added service.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

There will definitely be a difference in price comparing an ID to a normal contractor but the advice and project management is the additional service you are paying for. Entrust the ID to make the best choice for you but must also make yourself available to make quick decisions when the ID offers options.

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

This is the second home that Jeremy has designed for us and we love that his designs are not only great looking but they are also highly functional. He is creative, takes time to understand our needs, and is able to balance the differing tastes of me and my husband. What's more, Jeremy has a good team of sub-contractors who can consistently deliver excellent quality and they all take pride in their workmanship. We stayed at our first home for almost 10 years, and all our potential buyers felt his design still looked modern and were impressed that our fixtures were still in good shape. Hence, we can confidently say that Jeremy's designs can stand the test of time, and seemingly does not "age", providing great value to homeowners. We love our current home and all our guests are wowed by his design.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

I feel that it is very important to find a designer who you can click with, and shares some similarities with you in terms of design aesthetics and working style. Renovating a new home can be a stressful experience, so having a good working relatship with your designer is crucial. A good designer will listen and cater to your needs but a great designer is one who can anticipate issues that you may not see and advise you against making wrong design decisions even if you love them, and then come up with an even better idea.

House Type: Condominium

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Andy Kwek

Budget: $30k - $40k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Yes, Definitely. This is in fact my second apartment designed and completed by Andy. I would want to work with people that takes pride and responsibility in his work. Right from the beginning, Andy was very much into the project, each step and process. We discussed the design concept and based on the floor layout, he came out with several sketches for review, followed by choosing the colors and lightings. With all these agreed and criteria met, he produced the 3D drawings. Minimum alterations were required by then. Even at the construction stage, he was still very much into it. Came to the job site almost everyday to conduct the inspection Himself, rather then leaving it to the men.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

As Owners, we have to ask ourselves what we want and try to give the designer a clear vision. Work with the designer to create what you would like to live in. Be proactive, do the inspection with the designer during the construction. It will be extremely difficult and costly to change or redo after completion.

House Type: HDB 4-Room

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Jeremy Ong

Budget: $60k - $70k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

Jeremy was the only designer whom I've met (out of 4) that were able to freely express his ideas through free-drawing. He didn't need any computer software whatsoever, he was able to hand-draw the ideas and was able to explain it very clearly to us! He's definitely very knowledgeable not just in design but he also knows the various attributes of the different materials, and he would be able to advise if whether it would meet our lifestyle requirements as well!

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Look out for designers who are not just in name, but they are able to showcase their skills and knowledge through hand-drawing and clear communication of their ideas/concepts. (Test them by asking them to draw out something simple just to be convince that they truly have the skills and knowledge, and not just reliant on software to generate 3D drawings. Real designers can draw, based on my experience with Jeremy from Designscale) Definitely one thing you will have to do is to go to their company's website, check out their Facebook page to see which projects they have done, and it would be really ideal if you are able to visit one of their near-completed work sites to take a look at their workmanship.

ID Firm: Designscale Pte Ltd

Designer(s): Jeremy Ong

Budget: $30k - $40k

Would you recommend this Interior Designer and why?

I would highly recommend my interior designer because of his strong focus on design aesthetics and functionality in his designs. The entire renovation process was a seamless one because of Jeremy's insights and knowledge into every single minute detail that went into making the unit such a splendid and comforting place I am extremely proud to call home.

What advice would you give to future homeowners?

Feel free to have a consultation with your interior designer to get a sense of what you wish to achieve out of your renovation (e.g. what theme are you looking for in your new place, the timeline involved etc.) and what your interior designer is able to provide (look at the previous projects that interior designer has completed and if possible, ask people who have engaged that interior designer for their feedback on his/her work). Having a good rapport with your interior designer is extremely important (in my opinion) so be sure to find an interior designer whom you are able to communicate freely with without any inhibition :)
