Project Description

The artistic influence and reach of Industrial design is far and wide, and interior design is not an exception, as an increasing portion of homeowners in Singapore have been shaping their interiors with the metal and concrete accents popularised by industrial revolution. Daphne Tan of DAP Atelier has certainly seen her fair share of requests for this theme, and she tackles it with the finesse and poise of a veteran in the industry.

When the homeowners, Jovan and Joanne embarked on the design of this 1000 sq foot 3 bedroom apartment in Upper Serangoon, their main criteria was that function should be its core focus, yet they wanted the design to have a warmth that they could call home. They wanted a bright and airy take on the industrial design theme, a cozy space for themselves and their dog.

After the initial planning stage, Daphne set out to turn their dreams into reality. In order to create the vision of a ‘bright’ industrial themed house, Daphne applied a clever use of cement screed to the walls - characteristic of industrial design.

Generous use of wood was used to balance out the coldness of the industrial elements. Unmistakable was the black electrical trunking running along the ceilings of the house, offering a reminder of its industrial roots.

In the living room, after careful removing of tiles left in by the previous owner, concrete screed walls were put in place, The colour was kept light, in order to achieve that bright and airy feel, and they were positioned as the perfect backdrop for the dainty touches of wood furniture. The star of the show here was the luscious grey sofa, which Daphne tells us, was specially imported from Vietnam.

In keeping with the bright and white theme of the entire design, the kitchen was kept pretty simple and clean with wood grain laminates. The treated pine wood kitchen door adds a nice rustic element to the entire design, and the dining area sports a wall splashed in chalk paint, adding an element of imagination to the otherwise neutral space.

In the bedroom, Daphne kept with the industrial theme by choosing a rustic laminate for the full height bed head and platform bed. Function was not forgotten, with storage drawers built into the bed platform. Without doubt, the masterpiece of the bedroom is a custom made bedside lamp, fashioned in none other than the industrial theme.

An exercise room, complete with punching and pole dancing facilities, was added to give the home an outlet for entertainment. The mood for this room was more casual and the walls were painted with dark blue to create a relaxed feel.

Finally when all the work was complete, Jovan and Joanne could not wait to move into their new industrial themed haven. Once again Daphne has proven that she can produce designs that are functional and unique.
