13 Nov 2017 by SUZANNE LAURIDSEN | | Share

The open concept home of Nick and Erni is conducive to family life. With two adorable little girls just a year apart in age, 6-year-old Cloie and 7-year-old Joyie, Mum Erni can cook in the kitchen and keep an eye on the girls while they play in the living area. Hear how the homeowners worked harmoniously together with their designer from Design Profession to create this cosy house of ‘togetherness’.

HomeRenoGuru: Why did you choose to work with Design Profession?

Nick: I went down to this ID firm and had a discussion on what kind of concept we wanted for our house. Kelvin understood what we wanted – as you can see, it’s black and white with a simple, modern touch throughout the whole house.

HomeRenoGuru: How was the renovation process?

Erni: The whole renovation took around two months, because we didn’t really pressure Design Profession to do it fast. There was no stress for me, because I gave full control to my husband. He was the one who kept liaising with the ID firm, and I could see that he had no stress either, because he worked very well with Kelvin. We were in no rush to have our flat, so they took their time and did everything well.

HomeRenoGuru: What are your favourite parts of your house?

Nick: There’s no specific favourite part of the house, because I love all of this house a lot. To make it feel more spacious, we added in mirrors to create lots of reflective images, so that it gives the psychological effect that the house is larger.

Erni: I like our dining area very much because it looks so gorgeous and spacious. And also, when I’m doing my housework in the kitchen, I can still watch over the girls in the living room. That’s the perfect plan!

Nick: The study area was actually added on subsequently after the whole design. Kelvin actually elongated the shoe cabinet to put the study area behind the storage room. So this actually concealed the study area from the outside but still fulfils my need for a space to do my work and my studies.

Erni: In general our house is very small and we need a lot of storage. Especially us ladies, we have a lot of shoes, so I needed a large shoe cabinet for storing all my shoes. The girls and I appreciate our spacious shoe cabinet.

Cove lighting, complemented by recessed lights and pendant lights, bathes the interiors in soft indirect light

Nick: The lighting was also changed from the initial idea. The typical cove lightings are usually a box shape. However, when we actually entered, Kelvin felt that in order to make the house look spacious, he created an elongated kind of a cove lighting. The light that you actually see can switch from warm to white to cool through a switch on the wall, to control the mood that you want for the day.

Nick: My dad will often come and visit us during the weekends. As he is having some knee problems, we decided to have a built-in stool, which can help him when he needs to shower.
